About

A software company that still turns up to jobs

ServiceHQ exists because the person who started it needed these things for their own business first, could not buy them, and had the misfortune of also being able to build them.

01

Why this exists

It started as an internal fix

The founder runs a plumbing and heating business in the UK. That business runs on ServiceM8 — jobs, quotes, invoices, engineers on site, the customer who messages at nine at night wanting to know when someone is coming.

Running it that way surfaces the gaps quickly. Some of them are things ServiceM8 does not do, which is fair enough — no platform does everything. Some are things that could be done, but nobody had built. The customer messages arriving on a personal phone and never reaching the office was the one that hurt most, so that got fixed first. It became the WhatsApp add-on.

What became obvious after that was that plenty of other trade businesses had the same problems, and quite a few of them also had a half-finished ServiceM8 setup underneath. Fixing the setup turned out to be worth more to them than any add-on. So ServiceHQ does both, and the two feed each other: every business we set up teaches us what the next add-on should do.

How we work

Four things we are not going to change our minds about

  1. 01We use what we sellEvery add-on runs in our own business before it runs in yours. If it is annoying, we are the ones being annoyed by it, which is a much better quality-control system than any test plan.
  2. 02Plain English, alwaysYou should not need a glossary to understand what you are buying. If we cannot explain something to a busy tradesperson in two sentences, we have not understood it well enough ourselves.
  3. 03Priced for the businesses we come fromSole traders and small firms, not enterprises with a procurement department. That is a constraint on what we build, not just on what we charge.
  4. 04We will tell you noIf ServiceM8 is not right for how you work, or an add-on would not pay for itself, we will say so. A short honest answer is worth more to both of us than a sale that goes wrong in three months.

OnSpec Software Ltd

An independent British software company for the skilled trades

ServiceHQ is a trading name of OnSpec Software Ltd, registered in England and Wales under company number 17328057. The company also makes Flint, an AI onsite guide for heating engineers — same principle, different problem.

Registered in England and WalesCompany no. 17328057Independent

A note on independence, because it matters: we are not ServiceM8, we do not resell ServiceM8 subscriptions, and we are not endorsed by or affiliated with ServiceM8 Pty Ltd. We are a separate British company that builds software for their platform and helps businesses use it well. Your ServiceM8 subscription stays entirely between you and them.

No sales team, no call centre. You will be speaking to the person who both builds the software and does the setups.
